Running a promotion within Second Life may seem a bit silly at first. This is a game right? Well, not really. Second Life has changed a lot over the years and for some it has become their favorite pastime as well as their full time job. That is right. There are persons right now in the Second Life world that spend their days running their businesses and growing it any way they can to be more successful. One of the tools used by larger businesses both in the real world and within Second Life is the idea of promotions.
Promotions take all kinds of forms but usually have the same end goal in mind: Bringing in more people and selling more products. Within Second Life, you can setup and have your own promotions as often as you like. Setting up a promotion is outside of the scope of this article. Instead, it will look at how to know if your promotions have been doing anything for your business, or just costing you time with no real benefit.
At the end of the day, you know if you made more money then the previous day. You just look at your linden balance. Beyond that lies the numbers that can help you to see the effect your promotion has on your business. Although the result, more lindens is the goal, you may be able to leverage aspects of your promotions you did not think about by seeing how they affect your sales right down to the specific product level. Here are two methods for seeing how a promotion is affecting your business. Log into SLST and read on.
Open up the My Summary page by clicking the view link at the top and then selecting My Summary. Depending on previous setup you may have done, the sit will present you with a blank screen or a screen filled with graphs and grids. Click the Add Content link at the top right of the screen. For now, choose the Revenue History item and click add. It will show you the bottom line over time. Noting when you started the promotion, you can look at the before and after picture of you bottom line. Similarly, you can add the “Sale Count per Day Line” to view the number of sales you have had per day.
These two items can help you to view your business and see how well it has been doing both before and after you stared your promotion.
Take some time to explore the various pieces that you can add to the screen by clicking the Add Content link again. After you add more items to you page, notice the little triangle near the top left of each part box. Clicking it gives you the ability to change preferences for that specific part box. You can setup views of your data that let you look at specific dates. For example, you might setup two “Revenue Percentage by Category” items, one showing your data before your current promotion and one showing your data after.
Leveraging the “My Summary” page will give you the tools necessary to view your promotions and get under the hood of your data so you can come up with even more interesting promotions in the future.
